Flint River Project

An immersive authentic educational project by Westwood Schools in Camilla, GA US

Students, faculty, conservationists, scientists, historians, authors, and others unite to preserve our Flint River Heritage.

Why the Flint River?

"Wingate checked on his horses his rein
With a hand as light as a butterfly
And drank content in body and brain
As he gazed for a moment at the sky.
This was his Georgia - this his share
Of pine and river and sleepy air."

Stephen Vincent-Benet, John Brown's Body.

The Flint River was just named one of the 10 endangered rivers of the USA.

This project has been created for Westwood Schools grades 9-12 students to document, participate, learn, and share about this wonderful resource.

Flint River Reflection and Poem

The week on the Flint River has been amazing. The second day we went to the Morgans river property. It was really nice. Our group split up in two and half of us went on a pontoon boat while the other half hiked, took pictures, and wrote poetry. My group on the pontoon boat first and we learned many different things. It was really cold and rainy, but it was a great experience. After our long boat ride, it was our turn to write poetry. This was my poem:>The Almighty FlintFlowing through the…See More

The project that we are working on has been very successful and fun. The third day we were out we we went on a nature hike with Mrs. Betty right next to the Flint River. We hiked for about a mile through the woods as we gotten eaten alive by Misquotes. As we walked through the woods we saw many different trees, shrubs, and a few flower. We didn't see many flowers because of the flooding that occurred there but the ones we did see we saw in abundance. Our whole group learned a lot that day.Day…See More

I did it all on my own, nobody helped me except Sarah, Lindsey, Ilissa, and Virginia. It symbolizes the Flint River very well.See More

I'm glad that you've enjoyed it. I feel like in many ways it has been the best days of my life at school also. I'm so thankful for Mrs. Betty planning it and all of the volunteers and people who helped make it happen.
